In 2015 I was a volunteer nature trail guide for the Delaware Highlands Conservancy. It was a wet cool spring and fungi were out in full force.
White mushrooms were plentiful and being honest I was over them! Being in search of more unique forms and colors, I started to ignore the ordinary fungi. Okay, who am I kidding! I tried to ignore them but in my reality there is no such thing as “ordinary” fungi and the photographer in me thought “hey just snap a few more white mushrooms”.
Well as I bent down to explore a different composition angle on yet another white mushroom, to my surprise I found two red efts (juvenile eastern newts) taking shelter.
It was the cutest thing ever and absolutely perfect timing!
This ordinary white mushroom became my FIRST conservation photography publication!
